Weekly Sermon Passages
A Spirit-Filled Church - August 8th, 2017
Sermon by Pastor Tony Solomon
Pastor says to be filled with the Spirit, the first two important things we must do are read what the Scriptures are saying, then ask how can we apply it to our own lives.
We are called to do even greater works than Jesus did. Are we actually attempting to achieve this in our lives?
We need to be a Holy Spirit-filled Church.
God wants us to speak out even when it is uncomfortable for us to do so. The words he puts on our hearts are for someone who truly needs it, even if they aren't meant for us.
But what is Jesus truly saying in verse 12, where he says we will do greater things than he did? Pastor gives us principles to help us in our journey on what these greater things are.
Principle 1 - Luke 19:10
Jesus came to save the lost, and he passed that charge on to us once he left this earth.
Every single day, there is someone in our path we can witness to. Are we seizing those moments and opportunities?
Principle 2 - John 17:1-4
This was only one of many times Jesus went to be alone with his Father to speak with him.
Pastor says we not only must have time set aside for prayer, but also a space to go where we can be alone with God.
Pastor used the day of Pentecost as an example of the things Jesus did, when 3000 souls were saved in one single day, possibly more than the rest of his ministry on earth combined ... but they prayed tirelessly for ten days before Pentecost for God's blessing on what would happen.
How much time do we spend in prayer, praying for the people who need God the most?
Principle 3 - John 14:13-14
Whatever we ask for in Jesus' name, he will do. It was one of his many promises to us, and an important means of doing greater things to continue his work here on earth.
When we ask in Jesus' name, we are signing his authority upon that prayer.
Principle 4 - John 14:15
Obedience. If we love Jesus, we are to keep his commands. In doing so, we'll already be carrying on his work.
When we come to Jesus, he gives us nothing but the best. We need to give him our best back in return, through our service to others in his name.
Principle 5 - John 14:16-17
The gift of the Holy Spirit was God's way of empowering us to take that leap of faith in our calling to do greater things than even Jesus did.
Jesus said plainly in John 16:7 that without his ascension, the Holy Spirit would not come down to us.
Jesus came to earth to die, be resurrected, and return to Heaven so that he could turn us into a Spirit-filled Church, capable of carrying on his works, and more, long after he was gone.
